BERLIN, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Landing gear problem forced a passenger jet to make an emergency landing at Germany's Stuttgart airport on Monday, leaving no death or severe injuries. Stuttgart Airport said five passengers suffered shock and a stewardess was taken to a hospital for observation. Among those on board the Fokker 100 was Franz Muentefering, chairman of Germany's Social More..Democratic Party (SPD), who flew to the southwestern city to address a rally for upcoming Sept. 27 general election. "It was a very, very serious situation. We had to circle for a long time, before making our approach and then carrying out an emergency landing," Franz Muentefering said in a press release issued by the SPD. Local media reported that all 73 passengers and five crew members on board had to leave the Fokker 100 via emergency chutes. A female flight attendant suffered minor injuries and several passengers had to be treated for shock. The aircraft was on its way from Berlin to Stuttgart. Despite several attempts, the crew had been unable to get the landing gear to deploy fully. After circling around the sky for a long time, the jet made an emergency landing on a protective layer of foam, with the landing gear only partly extended. The runway of the airport was closed following the landing. The plane is owned by the small airline Contact Air regional, an partner of Germany's biggest airline, Lufthansa.
